Keep Your West Point Kids Fit

Keep Your West Point Kids Fit An important element in any Iowa child’s health is physical activity. Most young Fort Madison children are busy exploring their world and don’t need any encouragement to run, skip, or jump. But spontaneous activities like these may decline during the tween years when most Fort Madison children begin spending more time on indoor activities like TV watching, video game playing, and texting.

As West Point parents we need to be more proactive during these years to make sure our kids are physically fit. Helping them choose a popular West Point sport such as soccer, baseball, or skiing is an excellent way to encourage activity.

Provide active toys such as jump ropes, hula hoops, bikes, and roller blades and limit sedentary activities like movie watching.

Model the physically active behavior you want your Fort Madison child to have. Take walks with your kids. Take advantage of West Point recreational options. Go snow boarding, swimming, or hiking with them to show them that being active and fit is important to you.

Active Fort Madison kids need healthy between-meal snacks such as dried fruit, nuts, string cheese, and protein bars. As a child’s health advocate in Iowa, I would love to share one of my favorite super-nutritious snacks with you. Please contact me today!

Healthy Snacks For Happy Studying In Fort Madison

Healthy Snacks For Happy Studying In Fort Madison

Welcome to my West Point children’s health blog. My fifth grader’s elementary teacher recently sent home a note encouraging good homework habits for all of her Fort Madison students. The note included this suggestion: ‘Eat a healthy snack before sitting down to study.’

My kids and I sat down to brainstorm some healthy snacks they could eat before beginning their homework each afternoon. After compiling our list we headed to our favorite West Point grocery store to stock up on after-school snacks.

Here are my kids top ten healthy homework snacks!

Frozen grapes (or other favorite fruit)
String cheese
Fruit leather
Dried apricots
Hummus with veggies
Celery dipped in peanut butter
Fruit smoothies

West Point kids can focus better when they have healthy snacks handy. Another important thing to remember is that kids are more likely to eat healthy snacks if they can choose their favorites. I am a local Xe Energy Drink representative and an advocate for children’s health in Iowa. To learn more about healthy snacking, contact me today at 801.437.5984 or

NIH Children’s Check-Up Guidelines In West Point

NIH Children's Check-Up Guidelines In West PointAs Iowa parents, we know our children’s health includes physical, mental and social well-being. Most West Point parents are aware of the essentials in keeping their kids healthy; providing nutritious meals, making sure they get adequate sleep and physical activity, and guaranteeing their safety.

It is also necessary for our West Point kids to receive regular checkups with their Iowa health care providers. Not only will these visits track your West Point child’s development, but will aid in averting health problems.

According to the NIH, besides regular checkups, school-age Fort Madison and Fort Madison children should also see their West Point doctor for:

  • Significant weight gain or loss
  • Sleep problems or change in behavior
  • Fever higher than 102
  • Rashes or skin infections
  • Frequent sore throats
  • Breathing problems

I would love to share more children’s health information with you. Please call me today!

Fort Madison Parents: Is Your Child’s Car Seat Safe?

Fort Madison Parents: Is Your Child's Car Seat Safe?

Anyone in Fort Madison who transports kids in their car should regularly review the child safety seat regulations. Iowa and federal laws are periodically updated. Fort Madison parents who think their six year-old doesn’t need to be in a booster seat may be surprised to learn that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that children stay in a booster seat until their height and weight exceed the manufacturer’s limits.

Complete recommendations can be found at

Here are some quick facts for Fort Madison parents:

  • Keep infants and toddlers rear-facing as long as possible.
  • Upgrade child safety seat when child reaches max height and weight for each particular model.
  • Most Iowa Wal-Mart, Target, and Babies-R-Us stores carry safety seats for all ages.
  • Fort Madison children are ALWAYS safer in the back seat and those under twelve should never ride in the front seat.

Rethinking West Point Schools

Rethinking West Point Schools Welcome to today’s Healthy West Point Children blog. This site is dedicated to promoting children’s health in the West Point area.

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 20 years, you have heard about the obesity epidemic among U.S. children.

There are many worthwhile programs in the West Point community that promote healthy eating habits and increased exercise for our youngest residents. I came across an interesting article last week that focused on how the design of schools can affect children’s health in general and obesity rates in particular.

‘Many schools were planned without thought given to how students can safely walk or ride their bikes to school. Playgrounds have been cut from budgets. An overemphasis on competitive sports has created a disproportionate amount of funding going to a select group of high profile sports, while minimizing the opportunities for the majority of students who desperately need exercise.’ Joel K. Sims, AIA, “Designing Schools To Fight Childhood Obesity,” School Designer, May 2007,, accessed on May 16, 2011

Here are some suggestions for making schools fitness-friendly:

  • Incorporate features of professional health clubs
  • Partner with community fitness centers to create multi-use facilities
  • Combine electronic entertainment and exercise
  • Incorporate movement into lesson plans

As we plan for new and renovated West Point schools, let’s take our children’s fitness into consideration. As West Point parents and educators, we can also promote lesson plans that incorporate movement. I also believe we need to look at how our tax dollars are spent. Do competitive sports programs in Iowa receive more than their fair share of available funds? Could we better use this money to provide exercise opportunities for all West Point children?

I encourage you to raise awareness of these issues in your Iowa city. The only thing that will spur change is if parents, educators, and government leaders work together to lower the obesity rates in our Iowa communities.

Fort Madison Kids and Bug Bite Dangers

Fort Madison Kids and Bug Bite Dangers Healthy Fort Madison kids love to play outdoors, but Iowa parents need to be aware of a potential danger: bug bites. The ability to tell a harmful bug bite from a benign one is essential to keeping your active Fort Madison child safe.

Flea bites are common in Fort Madison, Nauvoo, and Montrose. They appear as a rash on a child’s skin with individual raised spots that might have a puncture in the center. Fort Madison children will usually complain of itchy skin if they have been bitten by fleas.

Bee and wasp stings, also common in the West Point area, can be differentiated by the number of stings. Bees only sting once, lose their stinger and then die, whereas wasps (as well as hornets and yellow jackets) can sting multiple times. Iowa homes often harbor wasp nests under the eaves.

The sting of a fire ant will usually cause West Point kids to have a red hive that may develop into a itchy, pus-filled lesion. Chiggers, which are tiny arachnids, cause multiple itchy red welts on kids’ skin. Check your local Fort Madison drugstore for itch-relief products and watch the welts for signs of infection.

Ticks bites will cause an uncomfortable redness on your West Point child’s skin and may even swell. Since ticks can carry harmful diseases, you should contact your Fort Madison area pediatrician if you child has had a tick bite.

Keep Kids Hydrated In Fort Madison

Keep Kids Hydrated In Fort Madison

Children, with their smaller body weights and higher turnover of electrolytes and water, are very susceptible to dehydration. Most Fort Madison parents know to look for the signs of dehydration when their children have a stomach sickness, but even healthy kids are at risk for dehydration, especially when they are outside on warm, sunny days. The risk is particularly high for kids who play outdoor sports in Fort Madison, Nauvoo, and Montrose.

Since dehydration is such an important issue in children’s health, be sure to insist on regular fluid intake before and during all physical activity. Opt for lightweight, loose, and light-colored clothing that covers as much skin as possible. Also, stay in close communication with coaches and make sure they are aware of dehydration risk.

Children who don’t exercise much, are obese, or who are sick, have an increased risk of dehydration. It’s important to allow all kids to acclimate to the heat when the temperature goes up in Fort Madison. Let them take it easy for the first few practice sessions.

It’s also important to help your kids recognize the symptoms of dehydration:

Dry mouth
Excessive fatigue
